Lasers are used to cut precise patterns in glass and metal, to reshape corneas to correct poor vision, and to provide intense heat in controlled fusion
By Anonymous CLEO-Europe, Munich June 23, 2003 -- SPI (Southampton Photonics, Inc.) and the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton, UK, have demonstrated over 600 Watts from a single fiber laser. These results, which the team believes to be the highest powers reported to date with a single fiber gain module, demonstrate that cladding pumped fiber lasers can produce the high powers needed to compete with more traditional laser technology, in applications such as remote welding, by offering high powers which preserve beam quality. These results are included in a presentation this week by SPI at the CLEO Europe conference.
The team led by Dr Johan Nilsson produced over 600 Watts output power at 1090 nm from an Ytterbium Doped Fiber Laser (YDFL). Ytterbium-doped fiber lasers are amongst the most efficient lasers available. According to SPI’s roadmap, single fiber, single-mode output powers well in excess of a kW will be achieved in the not too distant future. These lasers can then be combined to produce multi-kW solutions with excellent beam quality, efficiency and reliability. The work was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency under their High Power Fiber Laser program.
David Parker, SPI’s CEO, commented: “This result is another example of how SPI is developing scaleable fiber laser designs and architectures, from the 100 Watt fiber laser products that we are offering today to the kilowatt fiber lasers we will be delivering in the near future. These fiber lasers reflect SPI’s execution to our roadmap of delivering advanced, manufacturable fiber laser technology to our OEMsÂE

By Anonymous MILPITAS, CA May 19, 2004 –- FiberTEC405 25mW high performance violet laser is a cost effective, small package solution for biomedical instrumentation and Semiconductor Metrology. Blue Sky Research, a volume manufacturer of semiconductor lasers, laser systems and OEM components, today announced the company is accepting orders for its FTEC405TM 25mW violet laser with polarization maintain fiber. This latest release compliments the existing FiberTec product line of 635 and 405nm high stability fiber-coupled lasers. The new FiberTEC405 laser module’s power output has been increased and is now available with either a standard single mode (SMF) or polarization maintaining (PMF) single mode fiber pigtail. Additional wavelengths and configurations of 440nm, 473nm, 658nm, 690nm and 785nm are available in sample volumes. The complete FiberTEC product line will consist of violet, blue, red and near infrared versions, and includes polarization maintaining fiber and beam collimating optics options.
FiberTEC fiber-coupled modules offer considerable advantages for many applications. By separating the beam delivery system from the diode laser itself, beam quality and stability considerations are greatly simplified. The fiber can be positioned anywhere in the optical delivery system and the laser can be located at any convenient point, giving instrumentation designers more flexibility. Blue Sky Research’s microlens technology optimizes the beam profile for optimum coupling efficiency, generating maximum output power from the fiber. The output from the fiber is a near perfect circular Gaussian beam with low aberrations. Optional collimation or filtering optics can be installed at the fiber tip, allowing for a variety of different output beam profiles and spectra.
“We receive many requests for polarization preserving fiber-coupled configurations of our lasers, so we decided to integrate this feature into our complete line of integrated fiber-coupled modules,” said Chris Gladding, President and CEO of Blue Sky Research. “Stable and accurate coupling for maximum efficiency is extremely difficult. Our fiber coupling technologies enable us to mass-produce high stability laser modules that deliver optimized beam profiles with maximum output power.”
Each FiberTEC laser includes a high power laser diode coupled with a one meter single mode fiber, thermoelectric cooler and integrated drive and protection electronics in a compact (71mm x 24mm x 16mm) package. Power outputs of 15mW and 25mW are available for the FiberTEC 405 with PMF, 30mW version is available with SMF. Standard features include Automatic Power Control (APC) and Automatic Current Control (ACC) electronics. Control interface options include either a manual interface or remote control through circuit board pins. Performance meets or exceeds the best available laser sources, with very stable output power, beam pointing stability over temperature, high electrical efficiency and proven reliability.
Blue Sky Research offers laser modules for virtually any application, including spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, printing, optical data storage, and more. The 25mW FiberTEC 405 is available in volume production now. New members of the FiberTEC family will be announced soon.
